Private Driver to Pinnawala, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's elephant orphanage.

Pinnawala, Central Province, Sri Lanka — V68 Adventures private transport

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 to care for orphaned and injured wild elephants. Around 90 elephants live here today. The highlight is the twice-daily river bath, when the entire herd walks down from the orphanage to bathe in the Maha Oya river. It's one of the few places on earth where you can watch elephants in this kind of social setting up close.

FAQ — Pinnawala private driver

Is Pinnawala ethical?

It's debated. Pinnawala does provide care for orphaned elephants but the facility is also a major tourist draw. If ethical wildlife is your priority, Udawalawe's Elephant Transit Home or a Yala/Minneriya safari sees elephants in the wild.

How long should I stay?

Plan for 2-3 hours, timed around the river bath. Combine with the morning feeding for the most action.

What does it cost?

Around USD 15 entry. Cash only. We can stop at an ATM in Kegalle on the way.
