Lion Rock fortress, frescoes, the eighth wonder.

Sigiriya, Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka — V68 Adventures private transport

Sigiriya, the 200-metre Lion Rock fortress, is Sri Lanka's most photographed monument. A 5th-century king built his palace on top of a sheer rock plateau and decorated the surrounding walls with frescoes that still survive today. It's a steep but rewarding 1,200-step climb. We recommend an early-morning visit to beat both the heat and the queue.

FAQ — Sigiriya private driver

What time should I start the Sigiriya climb?

Be at the entrance gate by 7am. The site opens at 7am and the rock is in shade for the first hour, making the climb manageable. By 10am it's brutally hot.

Is the climb safe for older travellers?

It's strenuous but doable for most fitness levels. The path is well-maintained with handrails. Allow plenty of time and stop on the half-way platform. Skip the final spiral staircase if you're afraid of heights.

Where do most travellers stay?

Most travellers base themselves in Sigiriya or Habarana for 1-2 nights, then move on to Kandy or back via Dambulla. We can drop your bags at your hotel before the climb.
